What to Wear Guide for Fall || Logan, Utah Photographer
It's almost that time of year where people start to see a few changing leaves while driving through the canyon.... and the calls start! And I LOVE it!! You know what time it is... fall family picture season! There is a really good reason why people tend to wait til fall to get their pics done. And no, it's not just because it got put off for 10 months already this year, although I admit that I'm often personally in that boat. It's pretty obvious that it's because we live in a place where fall truly is magical. The colors on the mountains and in the canyons, and cooler breeze that calms the soul after a hot summer, the crisp taste of apple cider, the fun family outings to pick pumpkins and wander through corn mazes.... There's a reason almost everyone agrees that fall is a season like no other. But add a great looking family to the mix and you end up with some pretty dang good pictures! I wanted to hop on the blog today and share some of my favorite ways to style a fall family photo session.First up, Mel's family! This sessions stuck out to me because the family still showed off their own personal style while still being cohesive. The tween girls added the feminine touch with their dresses and on trend hair styles, while Mel had her own touch with the tie collar of her shirt. Ivy insisted on wearing her "puffy vest," and I love that the family has a story to go behind her outfit choice. The boys each had colors that were cohesive, but didn't dress up so much that it made the entire family feel "dressy." Each of their outfits were paired with the perfect shoe to finish off their look, and voila! Stunning family photos.Next up, Crystal's family! There's so much I love about their outfits. First of all, we have to chat about lil Emily's dress. Crystal MADE the dress for this shoot, and it couldn't have turned out cuter. Handmade by mama to wear in in family pictures that will be looked at for generations, YES PLEASE! If you know anything about it, it's that I am a sucker for anything sentimental. Add that extra touch to any session and it instantly becomes more of an heirloom session instead of just yearly family photos. I also love that some of the boys are layered in jackets. While guys typically tend to wear a button up shirt, it's always beneficial to accessorize more, especially when there's multiple males in the family. And baseball sleeves? Hello. Yes please! That touch of Americana feel always brings comfort to a picture. I love that Crystal added her bluish hued sweater to bring in the blues from her son's button up. While there isn't a ton of blue in the rest of the family's outfits, I love the pop of color it gets. And it totally complements the reds going on as well.Next up, Mariana's family! This little family stole my heart. I mean, how cute is this chunky baby?! There's a few things I love about the look of these. First, I LOVE a flowy maxi dress for sessions on mama's. I think they are so feminine, and I especially love that touch of femininity when the rest of the family is male. I also love that the family isn't "matchy," but they look great together. I think the baby's plaid flannel is perfect for fall and really adds a cozy feel to the pictures. The Maynard girls always knock it out of the park for their sessions. Emily, the mom, has such traditional and fun eye. I really liked how she styled the girls for this session. She stuck with a warm, burgundy color palette that really pops against the fall colors. Adding the cardigan layer to one outfit adds some dimension as well as having different heights of shoes (tall boots, short booties, etc). I love that the girls had on age appropriate makeup to give the pictures that finishing touch.Katie's family is another family that always looks amazing. I think one think that sticks out about the way Katie styles her family is that she doesn't necessarily always match sleeve lengths. It sounds random, but it always works in their pictures! So even though one two of the little guys are in sweaters (which are super great for layered looks), it still totally fits that her other lil guy is in short sleeves. The layered vest over Katie's dress and the denim jacket over her daughter's also is great accessorizing and helps the pictures feel more unique. Ok, I HAD to include Em's family because first of all, they're one of my favorite families ever, and second, ROMPER. Em looked so cute in her olive green romper with the duster sweater paired over it. It's so unique and just adds a little element of fun to the session. I also love Kendall's utility jacket and Josh's vest as layering options for men. Rachel looks so cute in her trendy scarf that adds a little more color to her outfit. The little girls pair great with the rest of the family! The simple color palette of green, chambray, and khaki pops against the fall colors.Katie's family again because, hello, how cute! I love the simplicity of the grey, chambray, and navy. I also really loved that Summer's hair was in braided pig tails. While a full head of beautiful curls will never be the wrong choice, I liked that the braids represent the age that Summer was at in these pictures. Changing up hair styles year to year is always fun!Ok, Jess. Cutest boys ever! The boys' layered sweaters paired with their cute side swept hair is both classic and timeless and current. Jess' flowy maxi dress once again adds that feminine touch to a family with all boys as well as bringing in that Americana feel that is always timeless and comfortable. I also liked that dad had on khaki pants to make the pictures feel a little more dressed up.Annalise's family really hit the mark for "dressy" outfits, especially ones that look good outdoors. They are just casual enough to be comfortable during the session because lets be honest, family photos with two toddlers usually involves some toddler chasing! I love the simple navy and grey palette against the fall colors. And PLEASE bring your dog to your photos if you're thinking about it! Any dog adds that final touch to just make it the perfect family photo!
