Reagan Turns One! || Logan, Utah Child Photographer || Watermelon Cake Smash
First Birthdays are kinda a big deal in our culture. I have to say that I have completely fallen victim to the necessary pinterest inspired decorated water bottle label and the paper banner that took entirely too long to make. Or the very overdone unicorn themed first birthday because who can resist a unicorn themed first birthday party for your first girl?! (Also, notice the absence of my 2nd child, Deacon, and his over the top first birthday.... he didn't get one.... #momfail). As a culture, we have somehow turned the first birthday into a milestone almost as big as wedding. And who doesn't LOVE it?!One of the great ways to celebrate the milestone of parents keeping their baby alive for a whole year a baby turning the big O-N-E is the legendary CAKE SMASH! (I did at least let Deacon smash his cake.) And what used to be a fun event at the party has turned into a reason for a big photoshoot and full on sugar overload of said one year old. I love cake smash sessions. Here's a link to some on the blog to see what I'm talking about. I think it's fun to set up some props and a cake that reflect what the baby loves at this exact moment in their life. Whether it's mickey mouse or unicorns, there's a way to incorporate their baby interests. And it's fun to do a session before the birthday so you have images to display at the party. Plus, when it's time for the real deal cake smash, you get to watch and enjoy instead of stressing about getting the perfect picture of those chubby little fingers squeezing buttercream frosting through them. That being said...... Oooohhh, baby Reagan! This lil lady hit her first year mark so quick! Seems like just this spring that I was taking her newborn photos, but nope. She's a year! Her mama is inspiring and is so amazing at feeing baby girl quality whole foods. So we passed on the cake for her one year session and substituted with watermelon. And lemme say - girlfriend LOVED her watermelon!! She was totally diving into it and biting a little too much at a time! It was adorable and such a perfect way to incorporate a fun tradition in a more healthy way! We ended her session with a little bath back home with some sweet pictures of mama and baby, too.
