4 Tips for Toddler Pictures in the Cold || Logan, Utah Child Photographer

Mister Jett is one of my favorite little clients.  And he has a winter birthday, but we wanted outside pictures for his milestone session this time. Like always, Jett  While shooting in perfect, warm weather is desirable, don't shy away from capturing your little ones during all seasons!  Here's a few tips to help toddlers and kids handle their outdoor winter sessions.1. Dress for the Weather - Layers are your friend for these sessions. A cute vest over flannel shirt with a thermal shirt under it offers warmth and style. I'm a fan of embracing the season too.  Add a hat, gloves, scarves - any accessories that will help your little one stay warm and comfortable during their session. Warm socks and boots are definitely recommended, especially if there's a little snow on the ground.2. Bring a Matching Blanket - Wrapping your little one up in a warm blanket in between shots helps minimize their discomfort.  Coats take too long to put on and take off, but a blanket is instant relief for them.  Plus, a picture of your toddler wrapped all up is a pretty great shot for the session, too!3. Shorter Session Times - This time of year, it's all about shorter session times.  Especially if we're just working on a milestone session with one child, a 15 minute mini session is the way to go.  That usually includes around 50-75 images.  Toddlers are usually the most cooperative in the first 10 minutes of a session, so doing the 15 minutes will allow us time for variety but won't push your little one's limits!4. Just Go With It - My biggest recommendation for any toddler session is to just let the toddler lead the shoot! I am happy to chase your little one around (it keeps me from having to go to the gym for the day!) and catching them in their little world. The real smiles and giggles come when they're just enjoying their life.  When we have expectations of how a session with a two or three year old is going to go, I can say that we're usually going to feel let down at the end.  But if we go into the session with the attitude of capturing your toddler at THIS stage of life right now and allow them to show us the real version of them, then the pictures are going to be more meaningful and authentic!
